J. Nucci Consulting, LLC is a NYS Certified Woman-Owned Small Business with two main objectives: 1) supporting homeowners and communities seeking climate adaptation and 2) coaching scientists and engineers to become effective communicators with their peers and the general public. Julie's climate adaptation work is grounded in her lived experience and empathy as a flood survivor/community advocate from the historic, disadvantaged, and rural Village of Owego, NY. Her presentation coaching is grounded in a decade of teaching writing/presentation skills to her science and engineering students and creating/teaching of a public communication of science course at Cornell University.
After realizing the challenges facing Owego are mirrored in communities across the country, she formed J. Nucci Consulting, LLC in 2023 to leverage her extensive professional experience in academia, scientific research, and science communication towards forging change in the climate adaptation arena as a full-time endeavor.
An educator at heart, she recognizes the immense need for climate adaptation education and seeks to share this inclusive resilience model with other communities. She is a nationally recognized speaker who has shared her story at the state and national level with both the historic preservation and hazard mitigation communities. Her goal is to preserve and protect buildings, tax bases, community vibrancy (historic and otherwise), and the mental health of residents.
Julie Nucci holds a BS in Materials Engineering from RPI, an MS in Applied Physics from Harvard University and MS and PhD degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University. Her professional background includes research and academic positions at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, Germany and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where she focused on materials science research, undergraduate education, and the public communication of science. Her professional background prepared her for navigating the complex process of elevating her home and representing the needs of homeowners and communities.
In 2011, Tropical Storm Lee devastated the Village of Owego, NY and Nucci's historic Greek Revival home within it. Determined to protect her home from future floods, she planned and managed its elevation. In 2015, her home became the first New York State residence in the National Register of Historic Places elevated for flood mitigation. Nucci is the Flood Resiliency Consultant for the Village of Owego, a role she created with village leadership. She is also an Ex-Officio member of the Owego Historic Preservation Commission, a Planning Board member, and chair of the Village's Climate Smart Communities Task Force.
