As an Adjunct Faculty member in the Materials Science & Engineering Department at Cornell University for a decade, I developed an experiential capstone senior research course that heavily focused on professional skills development including presentation skills. I also created and taught a public communication of science course at Cornell. As the former Education and Outreach Director for PARADIM, an NSF-funded Cornell research facility, I brought presentation skills training to the Research Experience for Undergraduates program. This effort, which is still ongoing, is much appreciated by students and lauded by the National Science Foundation.
I offer a half day workshop on best practices for science/engineering communication and presenting, with a focus on developing the speaker’s ability to tune their presentation to accommodate the various knowledge levels of audience members. Since presenting is a practice, skill development requires active engagement. The real learning comes in one-on-one slide reviews with the consultant. Once the slide deck is set, the coaching shifts to developing the presenter's speaking skills. I coach corporate and academic clients.
